In this tale I have left the battlefields of history, and have written a
story of adventure in Australia, in the early days when the bush
rangers and the natives constituted a real and formidable danger to
the settlers. I have done this, not with the intention of extending your
knowledge, or even of pointing a moral, although the story is not
without one; but simply for a change—a change both for you and
myself, but frankly, more for myself than for you. You know the old
story of the boy who bothered his brains with Euclid, until he came
to dream regularly that he was an equilateral triangle enclosed in a
circle. Well, I feel that unless I break away sometimes from history, I
shall be haunted day and night by visions of men in armour, and
soldiers of all ages and times.

This, like other Henty stories, is full of adventure, and the main character is a person of admirable character. The reader is privy to the inner thoughts of this man of action and integrity. Great for older kids (10 or so on up) and adults. Very good character and history education for students. One gets a vivid picture of life in other times and places. These stories provide a good basis for discussion about how things used to be and how things have changed. In this book, one sees the class distinctions in England and in Australia, and how people of different classes treated each other, and perceived each other. The main character, Rueben, is a good guy, but in those times, even though he suffered from the constraints on his social class, it was all taken as a matter of course. It was the way life was. He had no compunction about treating his native servant/friend, Jim, differently than he did his countrymen. Though Rueben treated Jim kindly and appreciated his heroic deeds, he still thought of him as lower-status. Much more fun than a text book.Product details

A Final Reckoning A Tale of Bush Life in Australia Illustrated Edition edition by GA Henty Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
George Henty always tells a good story. Never any doubt that the good guy will win in the end and live happily ever after.
Henty develops his characters so thoroughly that this story literally pulled me in and made me read the entire book in one night. The story is exciting, but the education this book gave of life in colonial Australia and the hazard of sailing from England to Australia will always be appreciated.
If you are comfortable with the language and customs of England at the beginning of the last century you will quite enjoy this novel. Adventure, heroism and romance are bundled together in this story. All together a fine read.
Riveting Australian fictional historic tale. A true collectable. And that is all I have to say. But wants 4 more words.
GA Henty are fun to read.
Tale takes you from England to Australia and back, during a time when Australia was first being colonized. It follows a life of a young man as he encounters and overcomes adversity.
Just finished reading this book to my 6, 8 and 10 year olds. The natives of Australia were depicted in a rather harsh and racist way but I'm sure the situations of stealing and lawlessness at the time are completely accurate. It was an interesting look at another country's beginnings and held the interest of all three kids (2 girls, 1 boy). I even caught my 18 year old listening in and enjoying. A great adventure story with some good lessons on the importance of living a life of integrity.
